„Berlin is Berlin is Berlin: whose urban development?“
“Berlin is a haunted city”. History and remembrances cleave to the physical settings of events. Every place in Berlin has a story to tell and yet, this capital is one of the most open to continuous changes and regenerations challenging the present and the past. This city, bombarded by different ideologies, ideas, trends, has never offered a unique picture but rather a fascinating complex structure in fieri. It has changed several times in rapid ways, due to political history throughout the past 100 years until today, expanding, growing, destroying, shrinking or regenerating by plans or programmes intended or calculated.
“Berlin is Berlin is Berlin” tells about the multifaceted structure and the multiple perspectives adopted in observing this city. It questions the forces, the ideals, the interests and the Zeitgeist that has lead and leads to its transformations, turning Berlin - as popular media often picture it - into one of the most thriving and lively cities in Europe.
Today Berlin as a capital invents its own profile in the global competition of cities. Large investment programmes and projects implementing new functions to specific parts of the city are one answer of private and public decision makers in urban development in the global arena. But, Berlin also seems to be a constellation of tiny little projects of permanent urban interventions, proudly claiming a voice in the urban setting. They are an expression of “self-regenerating surviving practices”, that realise alternative city making processes and locally based economies.
The concept of the GSZ Summer School is to explore controversial aspects such as historical evidence vs. cultural-technological revolutions, creative clusters vs. spontaneous forms of social creativity, the innovative institutional public policies and social practices, image production of the city between the global stage of socio-economic system and the creation of new local paradigms for urban development. But what is the role of people living in this city within this scenario? Whose urban development is it?
With the participation of professors, researchers, and activists in social, political, urban, and economy fields, the course will study the intertwined visions of Berlin’s urban challenges looking at different concepts of urban developments. Readings, site visits, urban explorations, interviews with stakeholders and media will support lectures and debates. The participants will be invited to draft a report, and essay on a specific topic discussed over the summer school, taking advantage of different forms of media according to the individual interests.

„Urban Ecology / Stadtökologie“
Der diesjährige Sommerworkshop des Georg-Simmel-Zentrums widmet sich der Stadtökologie. Berlin ist seit Jahrzehnten führend in Fragen der stadtökologischen Forschung. Unser Workshop zeigt einen Ausschnitt aus dieser Forschung und bietet eine praktische Einführung in Anwendungsfragen.
In Kooperation mit dem Graduiertenkolleg „Stadtökologische Perspektiven“ am Geographischen Institut der Humboldt-Universität betrachten wir das Thema aus zwei unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln: „Von unten“ - Vegetation in der Stadt - sowie „von oben“ - GIS und Fernerkundung. Eine Exkursion zum Zusammenleben von Mensch und Avifauna rundet den Workshop ab.

Sommer-Workshop 2007 (31.8-1.9.)
"Stadt und Individuum"
Der Sommer-Workshop 2007 des GSZ widmet sich dem Thema "Stadt und Individuum". Ausgangspunkt ist eine Diskussion zur Aktualität von Georg Simmels Thesen zur Bedeutung von Großstadt für kulturelle, soziale und psychische Entwicklung. Simmels ungeheurer Einfluss auf die Stadtforschung liegt in seinem Aufsatz "Die Großstädte und das Geistesleben" von 1903 begründet (Text-Download: http://www.gsz.hu-berlin.de/ php/georg_simmel.php). In diesem Essay schilderte Simmel, warum sich in den Großstädten ein neuer, urbaner Lebensstil entwickelt. Die Großstadt wird als Ort exemplarischer sozialer Erfahrung bestimmt, in dem sich ein Typus des Städters heraus bildet.
Der Sommerworkshop führt von der theoretischen Perspektive (Simmel) konsequent über zu Forschungs- und Anwendungsfragen (2. Tag) und endet mit einer Exkursion zu "Stadtentwicklung - Governance" in Berlin.
Zielgruppe: Der Sommer-Workshop 2007 ist interessant für Praktiker/innen, die sich für Theorie und Forschung zum Thema "Stadt und Individuum" interessieren, sowie für alle Forscher/ innen, welche die Praxis von Stadtentwicklung in Berlin erleben wollen.

"Brennpunkte der Stadtentwicklung - der Fall Berlin"
Der Sommer-Workshop basiert auf der Idee, einen Raum für Weiterbildung und intensiven Gedankenaustausch zu zentralen Themen und Fragestellungen der Metropolenforschung zu bieten. Vor dem Hintergrund der Stadtentwicklung Berlins werden im Rahmen von Workshops aktuelle Forschungsthemen mit Wissenschaftlern des Georg-Simmel-Zentrums und der TU Berlin aufbereitet und diskutiert.
Zielgruppe: Der Sommer-Workshop richtet sich an Vertreter aus der öffentlichen Verwal-tung, Postgraduierte, Promovenden und alle, die sich für Metropolenforschung interessieren. Er kann als Bildungsurlaub anerkannt werden.
